Full Text

At a public dinner given by the Massachusetts Mechanics' Association, the following was the seventh regular toast:

'Our distinguished Senator in Congress—As true to the South and West as to the North; his love of country, like the atmosphere, covers the whole union.'

'I land of noblest growth, deep fraught with pure and patriotic thought; abed to soar, and mark from both thy country's foes with eagle eye; freedom's guardian, hence a host.'

'Be England's glory, a Columbia's boast.'

The toast was loudly cheered in all parts of the hall. After the applause had subsided, Mr. Webster rose and addressed the Association, thanking them for the compliment just conferred upon him, and for the flattering attentions which they had at all times bestowed upon him since he became a member of this community. He concluded a speech of considerable length, which was listened to with undivided attention with the following sentiment:

'Honesty and Industry—The only sure foundation for the prosperity of working men, whether in the field, the shops of the artificer, the counting house or the professions.'
