WASHINGTON, Sept. 20. Shortly after two o'clock this afternoon Andrew J. Laird, a clerk in the Adjutant General's office, in company with a man who gave the name of Jas. A. Long, called at the Surgeon General's office, on Tenth street, and asked for Dr. Zadok T. Daniel. The latter answered the call, but had hardly reached the door when Laird, who awaited him with an open knife in his hand, rushed at the doctor, and, with an oath, said: "I am going to kill you." Before Dr. Daniel could fully understand what was said, Laird plunged the knife-blade into the victim's right eye, severing the supra-orbital artery, causing a painful but not dangerous wound. The two men were arrested while in the act of making their escape in a cab. The wounded man was attended by Lamb, of the same office. The only cause that Dr. Daniel could give for the act was his refusal to endorse the notes of his assailant. Laird would say nothing about the matter, but his companion (Long) said that 'the trouble is a personal one. Dr. Daniel had violated every obligation of Masonry and friendship, and that is all there is to it.'
The affair caused a sensation in the office among the clerks. Daniel is from Alabama, and his assailant from Georgia. Both men were fast friends.
