Full Text
General Foote.
The Democratic Review contains the portrait of this distinguished individual. It is a fine likeness of the General; but it would answer equally as well for Sargeant Best's monkey, Jacko. The object of the Review in publishing the biography of this worthy, just now, is to operate on the approaching election, in his favor. Perhaps it might be as well to remind the Review of what it said of Gen. Foote, at the time of the difficulty in the Senate, between him and Col. Benton.
"We shall not waste a word on the "disgusting rant of Foote, of Mississippi, "who proclaimed his ferocious "aspirations after a hangman's job. "whose functions he is evidently much "better fitted to perform than those of "a Senator. We protest, in the name "of the honorable body to which he be "longs, of the noble State whose dignity he has lowered, and of our com- "mon country which he disgraces. a- "gainst language and sentiments which "the most abandoned leader of a street "mob would in this country hesitate to "utters, but which this senseless dema- "gogue hoped would procure him noto- "riety. We are sure Mr. Calhoun "must blush to be found for a moment "in such company."
