Full Text
The 'Standard' and other Loco Foco prints in this State, have been endeavoring (for some time,) to produce the impression, that the recent election for Members of Congress is a more index of the retrograde march of the Whig cause in North Carolina, and seem to lay the 'flattering unction to their souls,' that by the division so manifested in that contest, they will be able to palm upon the People in August next, a regular Loco Foco Governor. They do not hope to effect, by a fair measurement of arms and by an open and magnanimous fight, but like the 'enemies' denounced in Scripture, 'availing themselves of the darkness of the devil, and by cunning and duplicity, to sow the tares' of discord in the Whig camp, and reap their ignominious laurels over a divided army. But we would tell them, they reckon without their host. The present and last fall's elections were effected by defeat of two of the regular nominees of the Whig party, is certainly no more matter of congratulation by the Loco Focos, than it would be for us to claim the election of the independent candidate for Governor in Alabama, as a Whig victory. And yet we know it not to be the fact. Nor can the close run of Asa Biggs in the Ninth Congressional District, be considered as a test of the strength of parties there. It is true we lost the election of Caleb Cushing, but it was not on account of the growing power of Loco Focoism—but was bro't out purely and from no other cause, than by the apathy of the Whigs. They did not put forth their strength—hundreds of Whigs, good and true, were not at the Polls, and to the concommitant alone, might his defeat be attributed. We notice in some of our distant exchanges, a disposition to consider North Carolina no longer a Whig State. In this we note there is a mistake. North Carolina is Whig to the core, and when the time shall come for the wielding and exercise of their strength, the Whigs will show to the world that, so far from degenerating, or falling in with the vile policy of Loco Focoism, she will cast such a rebuke on the braggadocio spirit which would seem now to buoy up their drooping heads as will cause them to exclaim 'the half has not been told.' Let them come on—and we care not who they may elect as their candidate for Governor; whether it be the successful Asa Biggs, the unsuccessful Charles Fisher, the Senator of his Party, or any one else, we promise him a dubbing to his heart's content. North Carolina with a Loco Foco Governor! Never—no never. The thing is impossible. Again we say—'lay not the flattering unction to your souls.'

Event Details
The 'Standard' and other Loco Foco prints claim recent congressional election shows Whig decline in North Carolina and predict Loco Foco success in August gubernatorial election through division. The article refutes this, attributing Whig losses to apathy rather than Loco Foco strength, denies North Carolina is no longer Whig, and promises strong Whig performance in August regardless of Loco Foco candidate.
