Washington, April 21—The withdrawal of Anthony M. Keiley, of Richmond, as minister to Italy, leaves the chances in favor of ex-Congressman Hopkins, of Pittsburg. Keiley's resignation was not wholly voluntary. The understanding is that some other place will be given him. A banquet was to be given to him to-morrow night in Richmond. By a mistake, and without his knowledge, the name of the Italian vice consul at Richmond was attached to the committee of invitation to the Keiley banquet, and so published in the papers. The vice consul, in answer to a telegram from Baron Fava asking him if it was true, replied, stating that it was not, and that his name had been published in that connection without consulting him, but that he did not intend to participate in any manner in the banquet.
