From the Worcester Republican.

GENERAL HARRISON is supported by the whigs because he is a military man. It is not pretended that he is eminent or distinguished as a civilian or statesman—Yet he is the most popular and prominent candidate of the very men who railed against Gen. Jackson; because, they said, he was a 'Military Chieftain.'

There is no prominent acts of his life, which seem to command attention save his heroic bravery when in active command as a General, and even this is not accorded to him by many of his acquaintance. A short time since it was stated that during the late war, the ladies of Chillicothe, Ohio, made a PETTICOAT, with the intention of presenting it to General Harrison. This was denied by all of the General's friends. Whereupon Messrs John Bingler and John Anderson respectable citizens of Dayton, Ohio, made a publication under their own proper names, in which they proved the following facts, which we copy from the Lancaster (Pa.) Journal.

"During the late war, the Western frontier was laid open to the enemy by a series of disasters and cowardice ; and the most important post in the possession of the Americans on the frontier, was Fort Sandusky, which was garrisoned by troops commanded by Col. Croghan, of Harrison's army. Gen. Harrison instead of throwing more troops in the fort. with a bravery that proves him to have the least claim to the name of a hero, ordered Col. Croghan to abandon the fort ! Col. Croghan like a hero, refused to do so ; he remained and successfully defended the fort, and by that means checked the enemy until the western pioneers were prepared to give them a warm reception. Under these circumstances the ladies of Chillicothe, with the spirit that has always prompted the American fair, while their husbands were preparing a sword to be presented to Col. Croghan for his gallant defence of the Fort (against Gen. Harrison's orders,) prepared a STIFF QUILTED PETTICOAT for Gen. Harrison."
