POET'S CORNER.

ON CONVERSATION.

OCCASIONAL Conversation is a Pleasure
Much esteem'd by Men of Parts,
It unlocks all Wisdom's Treasure,
And improves the noblest Hearts,
Through the pleasing More of it
Each communicates his Mind,
Now indulging sprightly Wit.
Now to graver Themes confin'd.
Slander, Envy, proud Conceit,
And Affectation, are its Foes;
Souls ennobled are to great
To be susceptible of these.
But Candour, Honesty, and Truth,
And Friendship free from all Disguise
(The Ornaments of Age and Youth)
Possess the Bosom of the Wise.
With all these blooming Virtues crown'd,
And Learning's fairest Daughter, Sense
They Joy diffuse and spread around,
And charm the Heart with Eloquence.
May Heaven, indulgent, to me give
To spend with such each cheerful Hour
Then happy, happy shall I live
Regardless of blind Fortune's Power.
