Gen. E. D. King.

The Marion News, speaking of the liberality of the Baptist in that neighborhood and the contemplation of building a new Church, says that Gen. King headed the subscription with $1,000. It further states that Gen. King is entitled to more thanks and gratitude, for his large donations for the cause of religion and learning, than any man in the Southern States. We will venture the assertion, that Gen. King has given more than any Southern man, living or dead, ever gave for these noble causes. Mr. DeVotie, the esteemed pastor of the Baptist Church in this place, informs us, that he knows of the donation by Gen. King, of more than THIRTY THOUSAND dollars, in the last eight years, to purposes of religion and education--how much more are such benefactors of their kind worth, than all of your noisy demagogues and frothy politicians? Such disinterested, such noble and unselfish liberality should be made known, and he who thus acts the christian and philanthropist is honored, whilst living as he will, assuredly, be rewarded and remembered, when dead.
