FIREWORKS CAUSE A SCARE IN STREET
Truckman Drops a Case He Is Attempting to Deliver In Park Place and an Explosion Follows.
A truckman attempted to deliver a case of fireworks to the Consolidated Fireworks Company of America, at Nos. 10 and 11 Park place, to-day; but just as he tried to dump the case from his truck there was a muffled explosion.
His horse took fright and started on the run for Church street.
The popping of roman candles, the bursting of the imprisoned rockets and the sputter of pinwheels attracted a large crowd in front of the place. Some one rushed to a box and turned in an alarm.
The employees of the fireworks concern appeared on the scene with hand grenades and fire extinguishers, which were turned loose on the box. One of them gave the case a blow with an axe and the spectators fled.
One rocket sped along the ground toward Broadway and burst against the wheel of a trolley car.
By the time the firemen arrived the blaze was out and all danger passed.
The clerks and porters of the fireworks concern were busy sweeping the debris into the gutter.
"We have not the slightest idea who owned the box of fireworks," said one of the office force. "The stuff was sent here by some small dealer evidently, who wanted to store the stuff in our factory until next season. Just as the driver of the truck tilted the box forward to drop it on the ground there was an explosion. His horse pulled out and we never had a chance to receipt for the box, let alone find out who sent it here for storage.
"It is impossible to say just what caused the stuff to go off the way it did. Improper packing causes as much as anything."
