The particulars as we learn from an eye-witness are as follows: A few days previous to the fatal affray, Latimer had got into a difficulty with a Mr. Gloster and another gentleman, which they determined to settle by a duel; and by the interposition of friends it was amicably adjusted, as it was thought. On Friday morning however, as Gloster was passing up street, Latimer accosted him, drew a pistol and fired, the wadding lodging in Gloster's breast but the ball passing over his shoulder. So heavy was the charge that the stock of the pistol was shattered by the charge. Gloster immediately retreated, but was followed by Latimer, after arming himself with two loaded pistols and a bowie knife. Coming up to Gloster again, he asked him, "Are you ready? One or the other of us must die to day." Gloster replied that he was not, and went and procured a double barrelled shot gun, loaded with duck shot. On Latimer's approach, he warned him to keep back but still advancing, he raised his pistol which missed fire. At this period Gloster fired, and most of the shot taking effect in Latimer's breast. As he fell he endeavored to fire again, but failed. He expired almost instantly. Mr. Gloster immediately delivered himself up to the authorities, and after a patient hearing was discharged. Mr. Latimer who has been very intemperate in his habits, is said to have been perfectly sober at the time of the affray.--Gal. Gaz.
