Full Text

The New York Evening Express believes that both wings of the New York republicans in the legislature of that state, and figuring about Albany, are guilty of bribery and corruption, and that the Bradley-Sessions bribery investigation has been only a hollow mockery from the beginning, both parties being afraid to press the matter. Perhaps this is true. The Express says:

It is impossible to escape the impression that the bribery investigation at Albany was closed before its work was done. Barber was not examined. Tillinghast was let off with a half-questioning. Tuthill, who made a vigorous speech on the corruption with which the capital is full, and declared himself willing to be examined at any time, was ignored. 'The committee was authorized to investigate the whole subject of bribery and the improper influencing of legislator; yet, while the air is thick with rumors of corruption, and men with no property to speak of and no visible means of have extraordinary bank accounts, nothing is done to get at the real facts of the case. Woodin, who is understood to have been Tweed's henchman in his infamous legislation, and has been accused of bribe-taking by the Tribune, was not required to unload the valuable cargo or information he is supposed to be freighted with. Mr. Depew, whose interests are directly involved, and who was reported to be a frequent visitor at rooms where 'gentlemanly games' are played, was politely ignored. The stalwarts were loud in their accusations of bribery, and said they knew of three separate cases in which money had been paid; but though they have a majority of the committee they have shown an astonishing backwardness in bringing forward the incriminating evidence. The investigation laid bare trails enough which the stalwarts did not follow up. And the inquiry was stopped before anything so definite and convincing that friend and foe alike would be compelled to believe it was proved? What does it mean but that the republicans, of both factions dare not press the investigation further? They appear to be afraid of making exposures which will incriminate their own men. They act precisely as though they knew that the most extensive briberies had been carried on and dare not let the facts be made public. Their conduct will be regarded as a confession of the most damaging character.
