Iso Carus, a Greek Priest, said to descend from the line of Jesse and the royal house of David, had been sent by the Monks of Mount Lebanon as apostolic missionary into Europe. He visited Rome, where he conciliated the esteem of the Pope—Paul I, Joseph II, Catherine II greatly honored him. At Naples, his influence with the poor classes, owing to his zeal and charities, was usually certain—He was, however, everywhere viewed with Jacobinism—arrested confined to Longjumeau met went to France—fell into poverty—and, at the entry of the Allies in 1814, had fled to the field of battle, amidst the walls of Paris, and afforded the cup to the wounded; he constantly visited the sick Russians who were in the hospitals, and became their interpreter, Daniel Mourrer, he had recourse to the Emperor Alexander; filled with admiration in his magnanimity, he related his misfortunes with the accents of truth. His majesty received him with the most affecting kindness, deigned to give him proof of his religious zeal; after having conversed more than an hour with him—warrant fought him, he decorated him with the cross of St. Wolodimer, and granted him a pension of a thousand rubles, promising him also that he would make interest for him with the king of France, but a church might be granted him in Paris, where he would be permitted to celebrate mass according to the rites of the Greek Church.
