Worcester County Gets Lion's Share, on Account of Superior Mileage.
Worcester county, as usual, gets the largest share of the appropriation for state roads, the main part of which has just been apportioned. The total appropriation for this year was $300,000, just half that for 1897, but another $100,000 has been appropriated for the uses of the commission between Jan. 1, 1899, and the time that next year's appropriation will become available. The work is to be mainly in continuation of that already begun. The apportionment is made out much later than last year, because of delay in getting the appropriation through the legislature.
In making the announcement of the figures, Chief Clerk Fletcher explained that the board had adopted its usual policy of spending the greatest amount of money in the counties which have the greatest mileage of roads outside cities, and this explains why Worcester county has a larger amount than others. There are several other places which expect appropriations for new work on highways, but no settlement in regard to them has yet been made. The amounts to be expended in different towns and cities already decided on are as follows:
Ashfield, $5000; Ashby, $5000; Auburn, $5000; Beverly, $5500; Bourne, $7500; Brimfield, $5000; Brockton, $4000; Brookfield, $5000; Buckland, $5000; Chicopee, $5000; Colrain, $5470; Concord, $5000; Dartmouth, $5000; Erving, $5000; Greenfield, $6000; Hadley, $5000; Holden, $5000; Lunenburg, $5000; Marlboro, $5000; Marshfield, $5000; Merrimac, $5500; Middleboro, $3000; Northampton, $5000; Northboro, $5000; North Reading, $5000; Paxton, $6000; Phillipston, $5000; Pittsfield, $8000; Plymouth, $6000; Russell, $5000; Shrewsbury, $6000; Sandwich, $7500; Shrewsbury, $6000; Sandwich, $7500; South Hadley, $5000; Sterling, $5000; Sudbury, $6000; Taunton, $5000; Townsend, $5000; Truro, $2295; Uxbridge, $5000; Walpole, $7000; Warren, $5000; West Boylston, $5000; Westminster, $5000; Williamstown, $8195; Wrentham, $7000.
