Mitchel Field, N. Y., Jan. 20.-T/5 Madison T. Montgomery of Durant and Lexington, arrived at Mitchel Field hospital by AAF hospital plane after nine months of service in the China-Burma-India theatre where he was with a service group of the Quartermaster Corps.
Montgomery's wife and 18-months-old son, Theodore, live on Rural Route No. 2, Box 38, Durant and his parents, George W. Montgomery and wife and nine brothers and sisters live on Route No. 5, Box 45, Lexington. Another brother is serving in the Southwest Pacific with the Engineers.
Montgomery drove a truck over the Ledo road, taking vital supplies into China, and had many interesting experiences before the truck in the convoy he was leading exploded upon running over a mine or shell in the road, causing the foot injury which invalided him home.
The 23-year-old soldier drove over the Hump five times, a 400-mile journey even more perilous by truck than by air.
In spite of his foot, which is healing nicely, he is in fine spirits. Although he seemed interested in all he saw so far from home, the more he saw of far places the better he likes this country.
He is not going back to farming after the war, however, but plans to take up a skilled trade, perhaps welding, perhaps bricklaying.
"But if I live in a town I'll stay on the edge of the town and raise something always," he says, he says.
Like all the wounded men flown to this air evacuation center, Montgomery was transferred to another hospital.
