PORTLAND, MONDAY, MAY 6, 1805.
THIS DAY.
The citizens of Portland are once more called upon to exercise the right of free suffrage; and again save the state from the arts of those who are seeking to revolutionize it. A full representation in the popular branch of the government, will entirely disappoint the hopes of their enemies. A perusal of the following communication, we trust, will excite the attention of ALL the electors of this flourishing and important town: -
Citizens of Portland.
To day you are called upon to exercise the privilege of election for the last time during this political year. Your exertions on the first Monday in April have been crowned with success: and in spite of the tricks and falsehoods of the democrats, your favorite gov. Strong is again seated in the chair of government. A Federal Senate is also elected, so that in these two important points, your adversaries have been foiled.
One chance however is left them, and no measures will be left untried to give it success. Should there be a democratic house, although it will be out of their power to do much mischief, they will unquestionably prevent much good. Their first object will be to circumscribe the governor, by a democratic council in order to defeat all his designs for the good of the state, and to render his seat as uncomfortable as possible, in hopes to drive him to a resignation.
Their next plan will be to thwart every legislative measure proposed by the senate, that they may bring the government to a stand and avail themselves of an interregnum to mature their schemes for the next annual election.
A majority of the citizens of the state are unquestionably federal republicans, but 'tis possible that great activity on the democratic side, may give them a preponderance in the house, and it will unless the laudable zeal of the federalists is again brought into action.
The same principles which induced you so warmly to advocate the election of Gov. Strong, demand your exertion this day to secure a full representation and one that will support the character this town has so honorably acquired.
The democrats are still. but you must not suppose they are inactive. The vote of the 1st April has convinced them that in a fair struggle they must be defeated.-silence therefore is their policy, and if by that they can make the federalists believe they are asleep, they will arise in their strength and perhaps gain a victory.-But you need only to be reminded, that in past times they have assumed the like appearance of indifference until the day of election, and then have thrown off the mask and shown that they are fully prepared for the contest.
Fellow citizens! Once more be at your posts -all you have gained, may be lost by this day's negligence.-Turn out in your full strength, and show that you can not only begin, but can persevere in a good cause unto the end.
VIGILANCE.
