THE PUBLICK LEDGER

FRIDAY EVENING, JUNE 10, 1812.

It was yesterday confidently affirmed and generally believed, that the senate had passed the war bill or resolution on Monday; but the arrival of Capt. Sever's packet from Baltimore, bringing the papers of that city to Wednesday, so far from confirming the report of yesterday, expressly state the contrary. It is however due to truth, that we should prove to our readers, that from all the letters and papers we have seen, we cannot entertain a hope that war will not take place, or rather we should say has not been declared already.

It will be seen by an arrival from Newry in Ireland, that an embargo on all American ships is apprehended in England. Upon this subject our correspondent in Baltimore says: "The arrival of the ship Eolus at New-York, in 32 days from Newry, has produced some apprehensions of an immediate embargo on all American ships in British ports. The consignee of the ship at New-York sent a letter to the captain, while laying about 10 miles below the town, in which it was stated, that advices had been just received from London, stating the expectation of an embargo, and advising the captain to put to sea immediately, which he did, with the wind a-head, having cut his cables."

We hope this information will prove premature; but we should not deem it very improbable. The moment advice of our embargo would reach England, it is reasonable to expect that it would be considered as a prelude to war; at all events an embargo might be laid in England, until the object of our embargo was distinctly understood. If the embargo has taken place, we apprehend it will be extended to all the British dominions, and even to Spain and Portugal.
