BALTIMORE, Sept. 18, 1844, p. m.
There is but little news here to-day.
You will observe that the Boston Courier, Daniel Webster's confidential organ, has hoisted his name, with that of Mr. Jenkins, for President and Vice President. This is pretty conclusive proof that the great whig statesman is determined to oppose Gen. Scott to the last, and does away with all hope of his coming out for the regular nomination. What the effect will be is at present difficult to divine. It must, as a matter of course, injure the prospects of the whigs.
The democracy of Baltimore are alive to their interests, and united in the common cause. They, however, must not deceive themselves by the belief that the whigs will not make a formidable opposition. There is work to do, and it must be done.
Our city is quite lively; business brisk. The Holliday Street Theatre, Front Street, and the Museum are all open, and attracting large audiences. The French opera at the Holliday is much admired.
Very extensive preparations are making for the cattle show and Mechanics' Fair, which take place next month. They will surpass anything of the kind ever seen in Maryland.
Our market is steady. Flour, to-day is more active—sales of 2,000 barrels Howard street brands at $4 25; and 600 do. at $4 18; City Mills held at $4 25. Rye Flour, $4. Red wheat, 85 a 90 cents; white do., 90 a 100 cents. White corn, 61 cents; yellow, 66 a 68 cents. Oats, 30 a 34 cents. Rye, 67 a 70 cents. Provisions are dull and prices declining. Groceries steady, Rio coffee, 8½ a 9½ cents. Whiskey dull—sales of hogsheads at 24 and barrels 24½ a 25 cents per gallon. The tobacco market is very active, and prices firm, as quoted last week, with an upward tendency—sales since Monday last of some 1,500 hhds. Maryland and Ohio.
Not much doing in stocks—prices without change.
