MOSCOW, Mar. 20.-Russians are continuing to advance toward the great German base at Smolensk, today's communique stated, adding that one of the three columns that have that city their objective is now only 55 miles away.
Another column is 72 miles from Smolensk and the third a distance of 80 miles.
The communique admitted that the Reds in the Donetz basin are continuing to fall back slowly under the constant pounding of heavy artillery and dive-bombers.
That is the only sector in the Russian lines where they are not holding or advancing, the report said. In the fighting in the central area, the Reds have recaptured 14 villages since yesterday, and in the north, Marshal Timoshenko is continuing his steady advance.
The communique stated that Russian guerrillas, in the western Ukraine, surprised a German garrison and killed every one of its occupants.
