MANHATTAN DESOLATE
FOLLOWING BIG FIRE

Directly across the width of Main street of Manhattan from the fire scarred ruins of eighteen months ago appears a dreary companion picture of smouldering ruins, charred timbers, twisted steel and iron that monumented what had been one of the most attractive and substantial blocks of buildings found in any mining camp in Nevada. Fifteen buildings were incorporated in the wreckage, comprising four two-story buildings, four hotels and a stately business block that sheltered the postoffice, says the Tonopah Times.

Thirty minutes was the span of time consumed in the total destruction that was accomplished so quickly that the citizens scarcely had time to save their lives, let alone look after property or furniture. The fire swept like a perfect maelstrom of flame, enveloping and swallowing whole houses in the flash of an eye. The south side of Main street for a distance of two blocks was wiped out with a loss that is variously estimated at $100,000 to $125,000, considering the cost of replacement. The heaviest losers are J. S. Conors, whose two hotels, the Palace and Central, with a capacity of fifty rooms; the Richards postoffice building, with three storerooms and upstairs lodgings, and the Toiyabe Women's Club, one of the most pretentious social centers in the state. Among the losers whose personal belongings embraced many cherished family souvenirs, a splendid library, a costly piano, and handsome furniture was Omar Maris, who was absent at the pebble quarry during the conflagration. The postoffice probably will be transferred to the former Dexter office where there is a complete postoffice equipment. For the present, Mrs. George Wist will occupy quarters at the Magnet office.
