Probably the happiest person in Milwaukee Monday is Mrs. Rose Nelson, 558 20th Ave.
And rightly so, for Mrs. Nelson learned that she was the winner of the Tudor sedan offered by the Socialist party at the 17th annual picnic.
The camera caught Edmund T. Melms, county organizer of the party and chairman of the picnic committee, congratulating Mrs. Nelson after she had climbed into the driver's seat of her new possession.
HER AIR CASTLES ARE REAL ONES: WINS PRIZE CAR
It was at the supper table Saturday evening that the family of F. Leuck, 558 20th Ave., discussed the fine Ford sedan that the Socialist party was to give away in connection with the state picnic that took place the Sunday before.
"If we should get it," I would jump three feet high," laughed Mrs. Leuck, taking her turn in the conversation, which had taken on an "air castle" angle. Most every one likes to build air castles at times, indeed, it is worthy of being called one of America's indoor sports."
Her daughter, Mrs. Rose Nelson, who lives at home now since the recent death of her husband, said that while they might not feel able to keep it if they did get it, it would still be of great value to them, and she smiled as she made up a list of the needed things the value of a sedan would buy.
Stranger Than Fiction.
How strangely things do happen sometimes. The matter of the auto was put out of mind when the work of doing up the supper dishes was taken in hand, and afterward when they sat around and the conversation became general, a car was not mentioned, even if it might have been in the thoughts of some of those present. Later there came a ring at the bell.
A man stood outside the door as it was opened by Mrs. Nelson, and as the light from within fell on his face, Mrs. Nelson recognized the caller as Edmund T. Melms, one of the officials in the Socialist party. She had seen him many times at party picnics and affairs. But her heart gave a jump when he asked if Mrs. Nelson lived there. Like a flash she divined the truth--it was something about the car, she was just sure of it.
And it was. He had called to inform them that the meeting in Brisbane hall an hour earlier had resulted in her selection as the ticket holder to whom the Ford sedan should be given. On his way home, being also a south sider, he had agreed to break the good news to the lucky woman.
Claims Her Treasure.
Then, of course, in the midst of the general family jubilation, the remark of Mrs. Nelson's mother had to be repeated and the Socialist official laughed heartily at how soon Mrs. Leuck's promise had been "called." She was let off, however.
Mr. Leuck laid down his Milwaukee Leader to tell Melms how his family was all Socialist and how Mrs. Nelson's two brothers were members of the 11th ward branch.
Mrs. Nelson is now a working woman, and has to support her three children. She went to work in a cheerful mood Monday morning and then got a little time off to go to Brisbane hall and to take over her new acquisition, at which moment the ubiquitous Leader camera man pointed the news camera at her and touched the button.
