Editor Mannix of the Bullfrog Miner in commenting on conditions at Rhyolite, says:
The railroad brought many blessings to Rhyolite and the Bullfrog district. It also brought some things that cannot be called blessings.
Among the blessings can be mentioned an influx of good, industrious people—monied men and working men. Among the curses—common to such events as the completion of a railroad into a community, whether mining or otherwise—are the loafers, hoboes and criminals that follow the iron steed into new pastures, where, until they are found out, the picking is good.
The presence of this gentry in Rhyolite has become noticeable in the last 10 days. It has been evidenced by a big crop of drunks; by sundry petty larcenies and a few midnight robberies; by arrests and one or two gun-plays.
The Miner calls upon the officers of the law to be vigilant. The city, it must be understood, has taken on new clothes. It is growing in population and wealth. The evolution has been rapid and great; so great that we fear the true conditions are not fully comprehended.
Let us make very brief the sojourn of the petty thieves, thugs and hoboes in Rhyolite.
Give them to understand that they will be tolerated here only so long as they "be good." When they "be bad," it's a hike across the desert for them.
