The helicopter flying over town this morning heralded the arrival of the first boat of 1954, the North Wind which was visible this morning on the horizon and had been slowly making its way through the ice until it anchored at about 1:30 this afternoon.
This is the first winter voyage of the Northwind into the Nome anchorage in Bering Sea. The ice breaker Burton Island made the initial trip several years ago and also attempted to come through again last year.
Although the Burton Island was unable to visit Nome last year because of unfavorable ice conditions it managed to get to several mainland villages and several islands in this area.
