Last Thursday, about 12 o'Clock, the House of Mr. Jonathan Sowle, of Tiverton, took Fire and was consumed. This Accident was occasioned by the boiling in one of the chimneys, a large pot of turpentine, which catched on fire, instantly spread over the Floor of the House, and, by the violence of the Explosion, shook down part of the chimney : The house was in flames immediately ; and so far from having time to save the effects which it contained, that Mr. Sowle had not an Opportunity of saving his daughter, who lay sick in one of the chambers, other wise than by dropping her from a window upon a bed, which he previously threw out for her reception ; by which means she was preserved ; he then, being considerably burnt, jumped out himself. The House was consumed in about 20 minutes; and, with the loss of a considerable sum in Cash, a quantity of English Goods, &c. Mr. Sowle has suffered to the amount of at least one thousand pounds, lawful money.
