From North Carolina, the returns are not so satisfactory; although, so far, they are decisive as to the increase of Whig principles. There is enough known of the elections in this State to warrant a strong hope that the coming Presidential election will be carried by the opposition to the succession. Local and personal considerations had a great influence of course in the recent State elections, which will not be felt in the choice of President. The elements of opposition will be brought to bear in the Presidential election with all their force. If we are not mistaken, Gen. Jackson owed his first success in this State to an agreement between the two parties opposed to Mr. Adams to run an unpledged ticket, the party having the greatest number of votes to designate the President. The Jackson party had the majority and their candidate was adopted. This rule seems to be gaining favor—it is based upon the alternative that if a man cannot get his choice of candidates, he may at least prevent the most obnoxious from being thrust upon him.
In Indiana the elections appear to have excited but little interest. As far as we have heard from them, they resulted in favor of the Whig party.
