The Israeli Cabinet has approved a bill providing for two years' compulsory labor service for women who are exempt on religious grounds from military service.

Under Israel's National Service Act, all women between 18 and 26 are liable to two years' military service: Men serve 30 months. Women may be exempted if they come from orthodox homes where objections are raised on religious grounds.

The new bill, which will be presented to Parliament shortly, makes such women liable to serve instead in works of national importance, such as agriculture, health, education or social services or in immigrant camps.
