John Thompson, an American sailor was found guilty of robbing W. Bromley, a brother tar, of his bundle. The prisoner, in extreme distress, called at the Fox, in Albrington, near this town, to solicit relief. Bromley, hearing the company jeering the prisoner, kindly interfered in his behalf, gave him plenty to eat and to drink, and offered to provide for him in the remainder of his journey to Liverpool. They set off together, through Wem and Whitchurch, but after they had passed through the latter town, the prisoner, who was carrying Bromley's bundle, pretended some occasion to step aside, taking the bundle with him. Poor Bromley walked on for nearly a mile, sits down by the hedgeside, falls fast asleep, wakes on hearing the Chester Coach pass, and misses his friend and the bundle. He comes back to Whitchurch, and finds the prisoner in attempting to sell two of the shirts, had been arrested. The prisoner was sentenced to three months imprisonment.
