Full Text

Pittsburgh Fire - On the 15th ult., Gov. Shunk transmitted a Message, to both branches of the Legislature, relative to the late dreadful calamity with which Pittsburgh has been visited. The Executive expresses his willingness to concur in any measure which may be adopted by the Legislature to afford relief. His appeals are manly and benevolent. We copy: The weight of the present distress is tremendous. It appeals for some relief with resistless force. I have had an interview with a committee of the citizens and received a written communication from them- This and a letter which has been received while this message is transcribing, are herewith transmitted. They give a graphic outline of their loss, and express manly confidence in their ultimate ability to restore it."

A bill was introduced in the House, appropriating $50,000 to the City of Pittsburgh and suspending the payment of taxes and license in that city, It passed the second reading without any opposition, and was sent to the Senate for concurrence.

Large contributions are being made through out the country, for the relief of the sufferers, by that almost unparalleled calamity. The loss of property is variously estimated, but is thought on more mature deliberation that it will fall short of the first accounts given.
