MINNIJEAN'S FATHER IS ARRESTED FOR MURDER
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - (UPI)- The father of Minnijean Brown, one of the nine Negroes who integrated Central High School, was arrested Sunday and admitted that he shot and killed another Negro.
Lt. O. A. Allen identified the man held on an open charge as Robert Brown, about 50. Minnijean returned recently from New York, where she attended school after being expelled from Central High.
Allen said that Elmer Isaac, 68, the manager of a private Negro club near the business district, was found shot Sunday morning at the entrance of the club. Isaac had been shot three times.
"Brown admitted the shooting," the report of investigating officers said. "He stated that several people had told him that Isaac was mad at him. He stated that he knew Isaac had a gun and he felt that Isaac would shoot him if he got a chance.
"Brown stated that he wanted to get Isaac to tell him what he was mad about. Brown waited near his car in front of the club until Isaac came down.
"Brown stated that he had got his own gun out of his car and had it in his hand when Isaac came down the steps. He attempted to talk to Isaac but Isaac reached for his gun and Brown shot him."
The report said a Negro off-duty policeman, E. G. McDaniel, heard the shots and went to investigate.
"He saw Willie Bob Brown, with a gun in his hand get in his car and drive off. McDaniel got in his own car and followed Brown and stopped him about four blocks from the shooting," the report said.
"The gun was in the front seat with Brown. It contained three live shells and three that had been fired," the report added.
The report said a Negro off-duty automatic was lying under his body, but the safety was still on.
Police said Brown had been arrested before on misdemeanor charges, among them gambling.
Brown is a stone mason. His wife visited him briefly at the jail but police said his daughter was not with her.
Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney J. Frank Holt was reported out of town. He was to question Brown Monday.
