A New Method of Robbery
A London correspondent of the Montreal Gazette writes that the new method of robbery is a sudden bold attack in daylight in the open street. Anyone acquainted with London knows that a row in a thoroughfare, though it collects a mob, rarely leads to any interference if a policeman is not by. Relying on this, the London highwayman makes a dig at the stomach or face of some person against whom he has run, at the same time handing his wallet to an accomplice who bolts with it. The number of such cases which have recently occurred is exciting considerable alarm. To be knocked about and robbed in Fleet street at noon, exceeds in belief and in fact the old watchman days-or the 'prentice riots, which were at least confined to dusk. A case having come before the Recorder of London, he has passed such heavy sentences on the ruffians as will very likely be a lesson to their mates.
