CIVIL RIGHTS
Philadelphia—Incorporation of the recommendations of the President's Committee on Civil Rights in the platform of Henry A. Wallace's new party was urged by Madison S. Jones, NAACP Administrative assistant, who appeared before the party's resolutions committee on behalf of 22 national Negro organizations with a combined membership of more than 6 million.
"We know that your organization is a new party, and accordingly, has no record by which to measure the sincerity of your pronouncements," Mr. Jones said. "We expect from you forthright endorsement of not only the civil rights legislation which is of such vital importance to minorities in this country, but also of such urgent social legislation as housing, price control, minimum wages and federal aid to education."
Presenting the "Declaration of Negro Voters" drawn up by representatives of the 22 organizations meeting in New York on March 27 of this year. Mr. Jones concluded: "We are constrained to say to this new party, as we have already said to the old parties—that the Negro is no longer content with mere lip service. Today he asks for action; for an immediate legislative and executive attack upon the bulwarks of racism. We ask that this committee and this convention endorse the report and recommendations of the President's Committee on Civil Rights and call for immediate enactment of the legislation proposed by the President in his message to the Congress on February 2, 1948."
