CARDINALS WIN AND LOSE WITH CINCINNATI REDS

Rogers Hornsby's Cardinals opened their last long home stay at Sportsman's Park yesterday afternoon by splitting a double header with the Cincinnati Reds, very poor fielding gave the visitors the first game 7 to 6 while the Birds easily won the second 5 to 1.

Six ghastly errors together with poor pitching by Rhem, Mails, Dicker man and Dyer featured the first, while in the second Bill Sherdel gave the Reds only four blows.

In the first game Bell's error and Walker's double gave the Reds a tally in the first, but Hafey's ace back of a double by Shinners gave the Birds one in their half. The Cards went into the lead on Hornsby's double and Hafey's single in the third but in the fifth the visitors pounded Flint Rhem for four runs. A home run by Hargrave, singles by Rixey and Smith, Pinelli's three-bagger and a bad throw by Bell accounting for the runs.

The Reds increased their lead off Mails in the sixth. Singles by Hargrave, Schultz, Pinelli and Bressler, Roush's sacrifice fly and erratic fielding by Bell, Shinners and Mails being responsible. The Cards pounded Rixey off the mound in the eighth, Bottomley's double, Hafey's single and Bell's triple good for three runs and in the ninth singles by Shinners, Hornsby and Bottomley blasted Benton off the hill but Carl Mays stopped the insurrection.

Sherdel defeated Marvin Goodwin, former Cardinal, in a hurling duel in the second. A pass to Pinelli and Niehaus' scratch hit to Thevenow gave the Reds a run in the fourth but in their half the Cards took the lead to stay. Hornsby's thirty-sixth homer of the season, a drive into the right field stands, tied the score and doubles by Bottomley and Hafey scoring another while in the eighth Blades' homer started another rally with singles by Mueller, Hornsby and Hafey accounting for two more.

The final game of the series is carded for today.
