DEBATE AT HIGH SCHOOL
Pupils Here Argue Important
Topic.
On Friday afternoon last the Lanier Literary Society joined issue with the Chas. F. Crisp Society in one of the best debates of the term. The subject of debate was, "Resolved, That inter-collegiate athletics should be abolished."
The participants in this debate showed that they had put in every available hour for preparation and discussed the subject with lively interest for almost an hour and a half.
The Lanier speakers were Miss Patsy Lupo, Miss Mary Elza Sheppard and Miss Ruth Britton. The Crisp Society was represented by Dan Chappell, Will Hawkes and Furlow Rogers.
The Crisp Society argued for the affirmative.
In every debate of the year the debaters have shown remarkable ability in making rebuttals, which, of course, demand of the speaker a readiness to think clearly, and to speak forcefully.
Upon two or three occasions speakers have gone beyond the limit of three minutes allowed in rebuttals and rejoinders. The officers of the societies have allowed this liberty, however, not caring as yet to do anything that would tend to dampen enthusiasm.
In the debate of Friday afternoon Miss Patsy Lupo ably rendered a rebuttal on behalf of the negative. This was answered wittily and humorously by Dan Chappell on behalf of the affirmative.
The decision was in favor of the affirmative.
Another joint debate is to be given before Christmas. Announcements as to the details of this debate will be given later through the Times-Recorder.
