This week a large number of half-starved cattle from California have been brought to Reno by railroad. Two trains unloaded at the point for the purpose of recuperating the weak and famished animals, and one time 33 head lay dead beside the track and in the cars between S. F. Hoole's planing mill and the grist mill. Some of those animals were dumped before life was extinct, and as they lay there helpless the Indians cut great pieces from the living carcass, and numberless hogs gathered to feed on the living and the dead. We do not know at whose door this brutality should properly be laid, but we do know that somebody should be held responsible and punished for outraging sanitary laws, common decency and every sentiment of humanity. The owner of the cattle should not for a moment have contemplated dumping 33 dead and dying carcasses within the limits of town. The Railroad Company should not have permitted such an outrage had the owner attempted it. When we consider that one hour would have afforded ample time in which to run the train out on to the sage plains, dumped the carcasses and returned, the alternative adopted is altogether inexplicable. On Thursday last the owner of the stock was engaged in hauling the carcasses across the track, and a few rods north of the town, near enough to give Reno the full benefit of the effluvia arising from the decaying mass, either during a calm or the prevalence of north or east winds.—Reno Crescent.
