Culture of Rice in the Sandwich Islands.

A correspondent of the Commercial (Honolulu) Advertiser, writes as follows in regard to the culture of rice, in the Sandwich Islands:

I take the liberty to send you one root of rice, the produce of one grain of seed sown August 5th. If any doubts should exist still in your mind, as to the probability that rice will become on some future day, the main staple production of these islands, I hope that this sample will assist in expelling your doubts. As far as I am enabled to judge from a two years experience in rice culture, I defy any other country on the globe to be as productive in rice as the Sandwich Islands. When one ear contains from 200 to 230 grains, and one root from 15 to 50 and upwards grains; when a half crop, on not thoroughly prepared kalo land, filled with the seed of noxious weeds, exposed to the influence of blasting winds, will yield two thousand lbs. per acre and yield three crops per year, I believe I am not all unreasonable in the assertion, that no other country in the world can beat these islands in the production of rice. Watson sets down the average crop of rice at 1850 pounds a year. Every one knows that South Carolina produces only one crop per year. Against this, the islands would yield in three half crops six thousand pounds, or in three full crops 12,000 pounds per year to one acre.
