MASSACHUSETTS LEGISLATURE.

In Senate, Saturday, March 3, on motion of Mr. Baylies,

Resolved, That the thanks of the Senate be presented to the Hon. Nathaniel Silsbee, for the able, faithful, and impartial manner, in which he has discharged the arduous and important duties of his office, as President of this Board, during the present political year.

To which the President made the following reply:

Gentlemen of the Senate:

I feel much more strongly than I can express, a sense of the obligations for the courtesy and the kindness which you have at all times manifested towards me. Your approbation of the deportment of the Chair, expressed by the Resolve which the Hon. member from Plymouth has presented, and which the Board has done me the honour to sustain, is duly appreciated and will be gratefully remembered.

It is gratifying to me, at the close of a participation for several years in the labours of this branch of the government, to be enabled to carry from it the pleasant recollection that no political excitement nor any discussion of a personal or irritating character has occurred. May the same good feeling and good fellowship long predominate within these walls.

Conscious as I am, that my efforts have been directed to an impartial and faithful discharge of my duties, I am equally conscious of the aid which, in the performance of those duties, I have derived from the talent, the attention to business, and the habits of order, which so strongly mark the character of this Board.

In the course of your legislative deliberations, new and important questions have occasionally been presented for immediate discussion: we have, moreover, within the present session, been called to the discharge of judicial duties, which fortunately, but seldom devolve on the Senate. I am not without apprehension that on these, and probably on various other occasions, my imperfections may have led me to the commission of errors, in which case I hope they have been viewed by you as errors of such a character as to entitle them to your indulgence.

With sentiments of respect and friendship towards all and towards each of you, and with a sincere wish that you may long enjoy domestic happiness as well as public confidence, permit me, on this last occasion which I shall have of addressing you here, to express a hope that our private intercourse may not terminate with our public labours, but that we may often, and long have the satisfaction, as citizens, of congratulating each other on the advancement of the Commonwealth, and of our Country, to the highest state of moral and political happiness.
In the House, on the same day, Mr. Lyman of Boston, being in the Chair, Mr. Webster of Boston, said:

Mr. Speaker--The recognition of services rendered his country, while employing eminent talents, for many years, in the Congress of the United States, as a representative of the people of this Commonwealth, makes it peculiarly grateful for me, to propose a vote of thanks to the honourable gentleman who has presided over the deliberations of this House, during the past political year. I therefore ask leave to submit the following resolution:

Resolved, That the thanks of the House be now given to the Honourable Timothy Fuller, the Speaker of this House, for the fidelity and ability with which he has presided in this House, during the present political year.

The resolution was adopted, unanimously.

To this resolution, the Speaker made a lengthy and very able reply.
