Registration Means Power

Editor, The Citizen:

We enjoyed reading last week's issue of The Citizen. All along this fine newspaper has been giving us much-needed guidance in the community. Your campaign to get people registered so they can vote is really a fine one, and should be continued on a year-round basis.

In recent weeks, we have read and heard a lot about many injustices suffered by the Negro people in Dayton. But these things cannot be corrected merely by talking and even writing about them. And they cannot be corrected by delegations going to see the mayor and other officials in City Hall.

What we must do is register every Negro in Dayton who is eligible to vote . . . and then see that they vote. If we do this, we will have voice in community affairs,

and we'll have power when we send our delegations and committees to see men who run the city about correcting the existing evils. If we don't do this, we will remain in the same place some people think we ought to be in.

Many of us have visited other cities and I seen progress people are making there. Right here in Ohio Negroes are forging ahead. In Cincinnati, two city councilmen have been elected. The same goes for Cleveland. In Toledo they have a city councilman. But Dayton has never done anything.

Carry on your fight to get the community registered, and if Negroes have any sense they'll heed your warnings and get busy.
