Below we give a few facts from the census of 1860, showing the relative prosperity the States of Maryland and Massachusetts.
Maryland. Massachusetts.
9,356 7,800.
Population,
Acres—square miles, 687,049 1,231,066.
Value of property, $65,341,433 $475,413,165.
Products of Industry for the year ending June 30, 1860, $42,576,006 $256,000,000.
These figures are surprising. Massachusetts, with a less number of square miles, has more than twice our population and seven times our wealth. The value of the products of her industry is more than six times that of ours. The census also shows that her tonnage is four times ours; that she builds four times as many vessels, and imports and exports four times as much. How does this happen ? Nature has done very little for her. Her winters are long and severe; her fields are naturally sterile; her harbors are not noted for superior capacity or security About the only blessing God ever did bestow on her was to fold up her granite into hill- and mountains and precipitating streams from her sides into the Sea. The secret of her success lies principally in these three things industry, education and freedom.
