Boston Police at Last Capture a Much Wanted Negro Highwayman.
Boston, Oct. 18.--Chief Inspector Watts was jubilant this morning over the capture of Edward Brown, a negro, who for the past two months has baffled the police, and terrorized the South End and Back Bay sections of this city, by robbing a number of women of their hand bags, satchels and purses.
Brown was arrested last night in the South End on suspicion of being the man wanted, but today he was fully identified by four persons who claimed to be his victims.
Brown's methods are said to have varied. One was to frequent sections of the city in which the better classes of residences were and hide behind trees. When a woman came along without an escort he would jump out, snatch at her satchel or pocketbook and make off.
Another plan was to run into women with bicycles, and while pretending to assist them, to get their pocket books. About a week ago, it is said, he robbed a woman of her purse, and in being pursued dropped his hat. He admitted to Chief Watts today that the hat was his.
Brown, who is 26 years of age, has served a term in the reformatory, and is out on a ticket of leave. He will be arraigned later.
