The light of other days, the humble tallow and wax candle and the kerosene lamp of three decades ago was very much in demand in this city early last evening.
The generators at the power station of the Narragansett Electric Lighting Company, which supply currents for the incandescent lamps in the stores suddenly gave out.
The lights in the big department and other stores as well as general business offices began to wane and at 5 o'clock they went out.
Several of the shop-keepers closed their doors, while others quickly lighted up gas which had been retained as an auxiliary system in case of emergency.
Some hustled out clerks and errand boys and bought large supplies of candles and lamps, and in a few minutes were doing business in a fair way.
The theatres, with the exception of Keith's cut short their performances, the audiences retiring quietly.
The few big stores and business houses which run independent electric systems showed forth like diamonds upon which search light had been turned.
While for a short time there was much annoyance, the effect in the dimly lighted stores was pleasing to the artistic eye.
