To the Printer.
Having days since a seemingly artless and most credible letter, representing the miserable condition of Mr. Laurens in the tower, as being in danger of perishing through want of the common sustenance of life, give me leave to propose a few questions, no less interesting to the cause of humanity, than to the honor and interest of our country.
Is there any provision by law for the maintenance of the State prisoners, as well as those who are in the ordinary confinement of the several prisons?
Is it just or honorable that a prisoner should be left to starve, after he is stripped of the means of purchasing the necessaries of life, because he has the honor to be confined in the Tower of London?
Is it worthy of a great nation to wreak an empty revenge on an individual for their own foolish dismemberment of their empire?
Would it not be prudent to consider the probable fate of Lord Rawdon, or Lord Cornwallis, lest the injuries of this respected American should alight upon the heads of our gallant officers?
Would it not be worthy of the lovers of universal justice to make a subscription for the relief of the unfortunate gentleman, who has borne so high a rank, 'till he shall either be released from confinement, or brought to an equitable trial by jury which is the grand privilege of all who are amenable to this government?
