Full Text

The Investigation.--The committee of the House of Representatives, have not yet been able to make a report upon the causes and circumstances which led to the capture of the City of Washington, the destruction of the publick buildings, &c. It will be a report of which the fellow has not been seen; that it will not be investigated by many we think evident, if we judge from the mass of matter always before the committee, besides more daily coming in. It appears that upon this subject the committee had before them in manuscript, 599 Pages, 34 Sheets, and 210 Letters, with some reports, others were expected, with the proceedings of a court martial! when these all come before the house, it will bring to the recollection of some, an anecdote that has been related by Charles Fox, whose Father had been in the staff of the British army employed on the Continent, died before his accounts were settled, and was thought to have defrauded the publick of large sums. Commissioners were appointed by the government to examine his accounts; on the day appointed, Charles, came with four or five waggons loaded with trunks of papers, which he informed the Commissioners that they might proceed to examine, and when they had got through those, he would bring the balance. The accounts were never settled, and what will become of our "Investigation" will be seen here after.
