San Francisco, Nov. 23. The story of a love that not only laughs at locksmiths but also pleads ignorance of the law was unfolded here today following the arrest yesterday of a prominent New York couple who not being free to marry eloped to California.
They are charged with violating the Mann Act.
The woman in the case is Mrs. Lyndon Walkup Burch, who a few years ago as Miss Isabel Keene, was a popular debutante at Hastings-on-Hudson, an exclusive suburb of New York. Her lover is Captain Arlando Marson, former Italian army officer.
He is her step-father-in-law and the husband of Mrs. Grace Burch Walkup Marson, the only daughter of the late Rev. Charles Summer Burch, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal diocese of New York.
Marson was held in default of $5000 bond, while Mrs. Burch was released on her own recognizance and subject to call by the government as a material witness.
Captain Marson is the finest man in the world Mrs. Burch said. I love him. We want to marry each other. My husband would have consented to a divorce, So we took the only course that was left to us and ran away. But I am ashamed of nothing. I fleeing to California.
Mrs. Burch left two small children in New York. She said that she hated to leave them behind, but had expected that the separation would only temporary.
