The Late Flood in New England.
From the Springfield (Mass.) Rep. Oct. 8.

As the routes of communication get opened, fresh details of the damage done by the great flood pour in, and we are still compelled to give up a large part of our space to them. The disasters are more numerous and widespread than at first seemed possible. There is hardly a person in all western and central New England that has not been put to loss or serious inconvenience by the storm. It is rare, indeed, that our farmers suffer so generally and so severely from any cause. The profits of agriculture, if not very large, are reckoned as pretty certain in this vicinity; but thousands of farmers have seen all this year's profits, and many of them considerable portions of their farms, also, go down stream in this week's freshet. The manufacturers have also suffered heavily, and many months and much money will be required to put them back where they were; while the loss to towns in the washing of roads and the carrying away of bridges will be appreciated when next year's taxes come to be assessed, if not at present. The railroads are mostly in shape for temporary use now, but it will take a long time to get them in as good shape as before; and when to the cost of repairing damaged is added the loss from delay of traffic, the bill will be found a large one.

We have had some rare autumn days since the storm; but it will take a good many of them to atone for, or make us forget, the furious ruin wrought by those two days of rain.
