Meany Sends AFL Message Praising Cuba

HAVANA, Cuba - AFL Secretary Treasurer George Meany told the seventh national convention of the Confederation of Labor of Cuba that there is "sincere rejoicing among free trade unionists throughout the world" because of the "remarkable progress" of the Cuban Confederation.

Mr. Meany extended the fraternal praise and good wishes of the AFL to the convention in a speech read by Serafino Romualdi, AFL international representative.

"On behalf of the American Federation of Labor, I give to you the renewed pledge that under the banner of democratic trade unionism we shall continue together our common struggle to abolish exploitation, to prepare a better future for workers everywhere and to make the world safe for human rights and freedom." Mr. Meany said.

He had been invited to address the convention, but was unable because of prior commitments elsewhere.

Mr. Meany praised the Cuban federation for its leadership in giving Cuban assistance to the United Nations in Korea, and for its partnership with the AFL, and other trade union organizations of North America in providing "dynamic, and effective, leadership in the Latin American trade union field."
