Full Text

Kansas Affairs-If the Stringfellows and friends of slavery generally in Kansas use strong language and talk of war in carrying the "institution" into that territory, they are not the only ones that play at that game. The editor of the Kansas Tribune, a free state paper, seems quite a match for the noisiest of them in bellicose rhetoric. In the Chicago Tribune we find a half column of extracts from the paper alluded to, a paragraph or two of which will show their spirit: There is no doubt in our mind that a sanguinary conflict is at hand. The course that the Slavery Propaganda have pursued and are pursuing, will inevitably involve the nation in a war. The blow may be first commenced here; but when once commenced, it will not be confined to Kansas. The whole nation must be involved. On the one side, it will be a war of right and of liberty—not only liberty for the slave, but liberty for ourselves; on the other it will be a war of chains and slavery. Of the result of such a conflict, it is useless for us to speak, further than that slavery will never survive it. We indeed regard the course pursued by the Slavery Propaganda as well calculated to shorten the existence of slavery by years. No mob can enter any of the settled portions of Kansas, and commit depredations without stern and manly resistance. The day has gone by for mobbing the people here. Depredations may be committed without notice by large parties upon a single individual—as in the case of the cowardly assault upon Philips—but no attack upon any considerable body will be made, without the assailants being shot in their tracks. The spirit of the people is aroused, and they will no longer tamely submit to outrage.

The Kansas Tribune editor predicts a sanguinary conflict starting in Kansas over slavery that will involve the nation in war between liberty and slavery, foreseeing slavery's end, and declares free-state settlers will resist pro-slavery mobs with force, citing the assault on Philips as an example of individual attacks but vowing no tolerance for assaults on groups.
