THE NEW YEAR
THE Editor of the Gazette, presents the compliments of the Season to his friends & patrons, gratefully acknowledging the support given to the Establishment, during the short period he has had the charge of it.- This consideration, alone, would be a sure pledge for his future perseverance in support of the Good Old Federal Cause, which gave to this country, all the blessings of PEACE and PROSPERITY, so long as federal men conducted our national affairs
But the reflection that his individual happiness is minutely involved with that of the community at large, he has a two-fold inducement to spare no exertions which may tend to restore our now suffering country to that GLORIOUS and HAPPY state of national PROSPERITY, which was experienced by all classes of citizens during the administrations of WASHINGTON and ADAMS.
With a firm attachment to the politics of Washington-to a government founded on the rights of the people, as contained in the Federal and State Constitutions of the Land ; this paper will always be devoted to the support of such Men and Measures, as will not prostrate the former, or violate the latter.
Notwithstanding the gloom and distress which surrounds us on every side, and men in office seem determined to plunge the country in still deeper distress, there is one consolation left : there is a "redeeming power in the people," which tyrants, whether they stile themselves emperors, kings, or democrats, must obey -Fellow citizens, remember this, and on future elections take care and vote for such men as will never interdict you from the use of those rights and privileges God and Nature has laid before you.
