OFFICIAL RED TAPE STYMIES PROGRAM OF STREET REPAIR

No Action From State Highway Department on Resurfacing Main Street Improvement Here was Listed Last Year as "Must" Project This Summer

Resurfacing of Bluffton's Main street, urged by the town council two years ago and promised by state highway department officials as one of this summer's "must" projects, appears to be hopelessly stymied in a maze of official red tape, according to reports received by Mayor W. A. Howe. it was stated the first of the week.

Although urgent representations are being planned insisting that the highway department make good it promise to resurface the street and thus prevent further deterioration of the pavement during the coming winter, there is no assurance of any action from the highway department.

The pavement, constructed fourteen years ago at a cost of upwards of $100,000 has many loose and broken bricks which allow water to seep thru to the underlying concrete base. This condition is further aggravated by freezing and thawing of the winter season.

Council Points Need

Members of the town council officially brought the condition of the street to attention of O. C. Kohi, state resident division highway engineer at a conference in his office in Lima two years ago.

The resurfacing program urged by the council was delayed last summer by the highway department which gave as the reason that funds were not available, the mayor was told. However he was assured that the resurfacing project would be first on the list of this year's program, he said.
