The information which we have from France both public and private must convince every one, that there is nothing to hope for, or to expect, from the justice of the French Ruler. We do not envy the feelings of those men who from a silly credulity in the French despot, or a criminal devotion to his views, have placed the commercial interests of our country in the situation which they now are; the resentment of an abused nation must overtake them.
We have certainly great cause to contend for a free and uninterrupted trade with France, because it is so valuable, and the Emperor will permit us to enjoy it under circumstances so honorable. Of all our immense produce from Virginia, he will allow us to send 2000 hogsheads of Tobacco, under his special imperial licence, and for those he will only oblige us to take Silk, Wines and Brandies, whether we want them or not. This is the great trade we are to enjoy, and for which we have cut off trade that enriched our merchants and mariners, and filled our public coffers.
Shame! Shame! on such silly and wicked policy; language fails when we attempt to expose and reproach the men who have supported it.---Norfolk Ledger
