The Two Candidates.
There are general reasons why our people, in common with American citizens of all races and nationalities, as well as special reasons why, as Irish Americans, we should favor Greeley and oppose Grant. Fifty of these reasons we give herewith in the Irish World.
TWENTY-FIVE REASONS WHY HORACE GREELEY OUGHT TO BE ELECTED.
1. Because he is emphatically a man of the people.
2. Because he is opposed by Harper's Weekly.
3. Because the "interests of England demand that he should be defeated."
4. Because his defeat would give a renewed lease of power to a corrupt and dangerous party.
5. Because he has been the steadfast enemy of slavery, proscription and bigotry.
6. Because he will aid in colonizing the great West with the surplus population of our large cities.
7. Because his policy of reconciliation is founded on a humane principle, and will dissipate the memory of a past hate.
8. Because he has sympathized with and aided suffering Ireland.
9. Because by word and example he has taught the true dignity of labor.
10. Because we want a man of ideas at the helm - not a know nothing.
11. Because his earnest efforts will be devoted to ameliorate the condition of the workingmen.
12. Because his "Homestead Law" has made millions of men happy and prosperous.
13. Because he believes that the public land should be given to the people, not to railroad corporations.
14. Because he is opposed to "rings," civil and military.
15. Because he will not squander the people's money.
16. Because he will uphold the simple dignity which becomes the chief magistrate of a republic.
18. Because he is no toady or Prince-worshipper.
19. Because he will select for his Cabinet men of recognized ability.
20. Because he opposed Know Nothingism.
21. Because his election will defeat the English party.
22. Because he will restore the Union and States' Rights, the foundations of the Constitution.
23. Because he believes in more rational employment than cock-fighting, horse-racing and bull-pup training.
24. Because he will reform and elevate the sphere of politics.
25. Because he is supported by the ablest and honestest men and journals in the country.
TWENTY-FIVE REASONS WHY GRANT SHOULD NOT BE RE-ELECTED.
1. Because he is the candidate of Harper's Weekly.
2. Because he is on the same ticket with Wilson, the unrepentant Know Nothing.
3. Because he is supported by all the proscriptive sectarians in the country.
4. Because, according to the London Echo, "the interests of England demand his re-election."
5. Because he is ignorant of the first principles of statesmanship.
6. Because his personal habits disqualify him.
7. Because he is at Long Branch when he ought to be in Washington.
8. Because he has usurped powers not conferred by the Constitution.
9. Because his party favors centralization, which is a step towards absolutism.
10. Because his government of the South is military rather than civil.
11. Because we have no assurance that a second term will satisfy him.
12. Because the old Know Nothing element is unanimous in his favor.
13. Because his bungling Cabinet has brought disgrace on the national honor.
14. Because he has tolerated fraud and corruption to further his re-election.
15. Because he has fattened his impecunious relatives on the spoils of public office.
16. Because his strongest partisans foster an antagonism of race, creed, and section.
17. Because Civil Service Reform demands that Presidents should be limited to One Term.
18. Because the honestest statesmen of the country are opposed to him.
19. Because the financial policy of his Administration favors stock-gambling.
20. Because he has done enough harm already.
21. Because he has bungled the Alabama Claims.
22. Because, though in 1868 his motto was "Peace," in 1872 he is the standard-bearer of the party of Hate.
23. Because his leading orator has openly expressed a desire to have Grant made "Perpetual Dictator."
24. Because he is a Gift taker.
25. Because of his speeches, (for sample of which see elsewhere.)
