Defaulting Teller Who Carried On $96,310 In Suit Case Gave Woman $16,000 and She Stole $10,000 More.

NEW YORK, July 8.-The police and Pinkerton detectives are scouring the city to discover the whereabouts of a male accomplice to whom they believe Mrs. Laura Carter intrusted some, if not all, of the $25,000 which they believe she obtained from Chester B. Runyan, the defaulting teller of the Windsor Trust company, and which is still unaccounted for. Another arrest is looked for at any hour.

President John Alvin Young of the trust company announces an offer of 10 per cent of the amount still missing and unaccounted for to the person instrumental in recovering it, or $2,500, the amount of the original reward should the entire $25,000 be recovered.

The bank officials take the ground that no one is entitled to claim any reward for the recovery of the $54,410.

Another interesting feature was injected into the case by the statement of a prominent bank official that the bulk of Runyan's original thefts aggregating about $16,000 and beginning June 11 went in speculation in Reading stock, and had he held on to his stock for a few hours longer he would have realized a handsome profit.

The officials of the Windsor Trust company are determined to vigorously prosecute Mrs. Laura Carter, with whom Runyan lived since his theft a week ago. They are asserting that she stole $10,000 of the company's money from Runyan besides the $16,600 which Runyan squandered on her up to the time of his arrest upon her own information.

In order to secure more information as to the past history of Mrs. Carter the Pinkerton men began an investigation of her, especially as to her career in Baltimore before coming here.

An official of the trust company said: "We figure it out that Runyan stole from the company prior to his final departure about $16,000, which he dropped in Wall street speculation. To Mrs. Carter he gave $16,600, about $600 of which was given to her a little while before he skipped out for the purpose of furnishing the flat. With $54,410 found in the flat we have accounted for $86,910. On the basis that he stole $96,310 from the company there is still about $10,000 unaccounted for, which we believe this woman stole from Runyan while he was living at her apartments."
